Year meeting (PRICING WORK) - Notes and Reflection

  • Make sure to attend curation group meetings
  • How to cost + value work - value and aesthetics
  • Price = cost + value
  • Costs = materials and studio bills
  • Value =
    1. Qualifications
    2. years of professional experience
    3. exhibitions
    4. publications
    5. whether artist is local, national or internationally recognised
    6. Daily rate of pay
  • Important to consider the commission taken by seller anything form 30% to 90%
  • Whether Tax is added VAT currently at 20%
  • Important to remember the possibility of works price rising costs could include - material price increase, transportation and gallery admissions. Value may include - confidence in artist increases, demand for work, better galleries and critics and death.
  • Degree show work price max £1500 and no lower than £100 - make sure to cover all costs endured otherwise be losing money
  • Cover costs and time taken to complete work
  • If the artwork costs £1500 to make charge at least £2000
  • Calculate what i want from the sale - costs + value = base price - then calculate retail price assuming commission is 25% sum will be base price / 0.75 = retail price - 0.75 is divisor =  25% commission 75% to artist
  • State whether the work is not for sale rather than over pricing
  • don't price to low in attempt to sell as your only under cutting yourself
  • don't forget prices - have a pricing sheet
  • don't change the prices once the exhibition is up
  • don't negotiate sale in private without commission - gallery will not be happy
  • do get an accountant to sort out costs - when established
  • keep all invoices and receipts - TEMPLATES VLE
  • Invoices are more for commission work to price work before sold
  • Shops where its a sale or return bases - sale is only for price given and agreed commission - down side work will age if it hasn't sold do returning the piece may not be in the same condition as it was given. If work isn't selling can ask for it back earlier.
  • Loan agreement
  • customer invoice if showing abroad
  • Important to consider copyright, once its been sold who owns copyright - copyright comes down to yours/mine

Abramovic Case Study - Research & Evaluation

Performance artist Marina Abramovic adopts a territory where both audience and artist coincide throughout the entirety of her performance. Abramovic’s early career commenced during the 1970’s an era where performance art was ridiculed, only fuelling her aspirations to prove critics wrong. Abramovic’s rhythm series, which constitutes of five individual performances from 1973 to 1974, scrutinizes the tensions between abandonment and control. At the forefront of Abramovic’s rhythm series is Rhythm 10 (Abramovic, M. 1973). Rhythm 10 consisted of Abramovic recording herself stabbing between the fingers of her left hand with 10 knives, as fast as she could; changing knives every time she cut herself. When all knives were used Abramovic would rewind the tape and playing it back, she then began re-performing the actions to the rhythm of the tape. Abramovic wilfully or not, subjected her performance to a rhythm over which she had limited control. Abramovic claims each cut manifesting itse...

Gingko Tree Research

Evidence in Sketch Book After collecting all of my research together i have been extremely drawn to the plants resilience, only enhanced further by its ability to with stand a nuclear blast. From this the plant becoming a symbol of eradicating nuclear warfare and actually being presented as a 'Prize' to cities who become nuclear free. A plant having such a strong history and is very symbolic in multiple ways is something i'm extremely interested in exploring further. While investigating the ginkgo tree and seeing how this may become present in my artwork will be an on going process but i know i must not neglect other investigations - not to put all my eggs in one basket.  Research - Websites https://e360.yale.edu/features/peter_crane_history_of_ginkgo_earths_oldest_tree https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-29920359 https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/8941542/Akihiro-Takahashi.html https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/04/opinion/the-whis...
