Competency questions

Each question below had to be answered in 250 words or less.

   Understanding and motivation

Why are you applying to join the Teach First Leadership Development Programme?
In your answer you should consider:
  • The Teach First vision
  • The unique and challenging nature of the programme
  • The impact you will have as an ambassador

I desire to become part of the Teach First Leadership Development Programme as i want to inspire young people to aim high and show them that they are capable of anything no matter their background. As someone who studied at an underachieving school, i understand how a young person may feel let down by lack of support. As one of the top four high achievers at my secondary school we got taken to Cambridge University, the experience showed me that i am capable and that i should aim high. That is exactly why i want to become an ambassador. Finishing my NVQ Level 3 in two years which was a three-year course while being awarded a distinction grade shows that i am proficient and ready for the challenging nature of the programme. Having me as ambassador will show you that I'm a competent learner and that i am able to put into practise what i have learnt to the highest possible standard. I believe that all young people should have the same opportunities as one another, they all deserve a high-quality education.

2)      Leadership

You will need to be an effective leader in order to have a positive impact on your students and in your school.
When and how have you taken personal responsibility and exceeded expectations to ensure success for yourself and/or others?

I have shown that i can take responsibility and exceeded expectations while training as an apprentice in Mechanical Engineering. While working at the company i would rotate departments meaning i had to adapt my approach within each team to assert my position. The knowledge i gained from being in all areas of the company meant that i became a valuable member of the team taking on leadership roles very quickly. The director of the company requested me to present our products to clients around the country. Not only was i presenting our products to a board room full of clients i was also designing new software which the business implemented into the company. This software helped areas of the business to work more efficiently ensuring the success of company. Other sites in the UK requested the software which meant i flew out to these destinations to teach them how the software works. Not only was it implemented in the UK, but it was being implemented across other sites around the world.

        Competency choice

Select one of our competencies and provide an example of when you think that you have effectively demonstrated that competency.

This is your chance to give us your best example of another competency you think you excel in. Think about how you structure your response - one possible approach is to use CAR (Context; Actions; Result). Make sure that you understand what the competency means and that the example you select demonstrates excellence in this area.

Options:
·         Humility, Respect and empathy
·         Interaction
·         Planning & Organising
·         Problem solving
·         Resilience
·         Self-Evaluation

As a Teach First participant you will be working with a variety of stakeholders – from pupils to parents, teachers to peers. We look for those that can build relationships quickly, giving value and respect to others to get the best out of them.

Situational Judgement test

The test took around 45 minutes to complete with 28 questions. Each question was a scenario that I could face in a while working as a trainee, I had to answer accordingly to how I would respond in that situation.

Unable to select Art & Design when applying to Teach First as its in order of preference.

I have submitted my application and should here back in the next month or so. Teach First is an extremely intensive training course but is highly recognised by many institutions and is an extremely competitive to get into. If I don’t apply without trying how will I ever know if I can achieve what I set my mind to do. I’m setting myself a challenge which I can hopefully win.

Abramovic Case Study - Research & Evaluation

Performance artist Marina Abramovic adopts a territory where both audience and artist coincide throughout the entirety of her performance. Abramovic’s early career commenced during the 1970’s an era where performance art was ridiculed, only fuelling her aspirations to prove critics wrong. Abramovic’s rhythm series, which constitutes of five individual performances from 1973 to 1974, scrutinizes the tensions between abandonment and control. At the forefront of Abramovic’s rhythm series is Rhythm 10 (Abramovic, M. 1973). Rhythm 10 consisted of Abramovic recording herself stabbing between the fingers of her left hand with 10 knives, as fast as she could; changing knives every time she cut herself. When all knives were used Abramovic would rewind the tape and playing it back, she then began re-performing the actions to the rhythm of the tape. Abramovic wilfully or not, subjected her performance to a rhythm over which she had limited control. Abramovic claims each cut manifesting itse

Bishops Art Prize what i am proposing - reflection & critical evaluation

Having not know what i was going to produce for the bishops art prize for most of this unit i am extremely happy with the outcome i have produce. I wanted to carry on developing my practise by exploring different casting styles which is exactly what i have done.  When i first brought the idea to the 3D workshop technicians they dismissed the possibilities of casting an organic form in concrete. Not wanting to fall at the first hurdle i began researching to see if anything like this has been done before with not much luck. After having further discussions with the technicians and drawing up possible options we came up with a process that seemed to be the most logical. At first i present the technicians with rather complicated plants to mould - this was a result of me not knowing the mould making process for silicone moulds and thus had to go back and get some organic material that was a lot easier suited to the casting process. Still not knowing for sure if the mould would work
