Nuclear Investigation - Research & Intention

Further Evidence in Research File

After making the ginkgo leaves i have the idea to possible map out the trees from the epicentre of the explosion in Hiroshima and recreate this in England around a destination that has nuclear history. Below is a map showing all the nuclear detonations that have gone off around the world. From this it is evident that no explosions have gone off in the UK or around Europe.

Screen shot of nuclear detonations since 1945

Seeing as there are no detonations in the UK or even close European countries i then decided to investigate nuclear testing sites in the UK trying to locate their destination. After doing this i found that there is no liable information as to where these destinations are, mainly down to the fact that they are top secret and government protected. This lead me to look for nuclear plants in the UK, the closest plant is Sizewell B on the Suffolk coast. After researching into nuclear energy using some of the websites below, I now know that it isn't a renew-able energy source however id doesn't release harmful toxins as other forms of energy do such as carbon monoxide. Nuclear energy has both good and bad factors however the ins and outs of nuclear energy isn't want i need to aid my project. The result of nuclear energy creating no real opinion on me means if i were to create work based on this subject i would be creating something that i have no real opinion about and therefor don't have the information to make an educated statement. As a result of this i must investigate other ways that link the UK and nuclear warfare, following my idea of recreating the ginkgo tree placements using the leaves i have made.

Nuclear Bomb store in Suffolk

Blue Banube was the first British nuclear bomb developed during the cold war and was stored for maintenance at the Barnham Nuclear Bomb Store built between 1953 and 1959. This was an atomic bomb, after more research i established that there a two types of nuclear bombs - atomic and hydrogen. Barnham was also the first nuclear storage facility in the UK resulting in a lot of rich history there.

Not only is there Barnham storage unit in Suffolk but there is also the site on Orford Ness where the military did tests during the 1960s - the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment base.

Plan to visit Barham Storage Facility & Orford Ness as part of my further research

Abramovic Case Study - Research & Evaluation

Performance artist Marina Abramovic adopts a territory where both audience and artist coincide throughout the entirety of her performance. Abramovic’s early career commenced during the 1970’s an era where performance art was ridiculed, only fuelling her aspirations to prove critics wrong. Abramovic’s rhythm series, which constitutes of five individual performances from 1973 to 1974, scrutinizes the tensions between abandonment and control. At the forefront of Abramovic’s rhythm series is Rhythm 10 (Abramovic, M. 1973). Rhythm 10 consisted of Abramovic recording herself stabbing between the fingers of her left hand with 10 knives, as fast as she could; changing knives every time she cut herself. When all knives were used Abramovic would rewind the tape and playing it back, she then began re-performing the actions to the rhythm of the tape. Abramovic wilfully or not, subjected her performance to a rhythm over which she had limited control. Abramovic claims each cut manifesting itse

Bishops Art Prize what i am proposing - reflection & critical evaluation

Having not know what i was going to produce for the bishops art prize for most of this unit i am extremely happy with the outcome i have produce. I wanted to carry on developing my practise by exploring different casting styles which is exactly what i have done.  When i first brought the idea to the 3D workshop technicians they dismissed the possibilities of casting an organic form in concrete. Not wanting to fall at the first hurdle i began researching to see if anything like this has been done before with not much luck. After having further discussions with the technicians and drawing up possible options we came up with a process that seemed to be the most logical. At first i present the technicians with rather complicated plants to mould - this was a result of me not knowing the mould making process for silicone moulds and thus had to go back and get some organic material that was a lot easier suited to the casting process. Still not knowing for sure if the mould would work
