Interim Exhibition - Evidence & Evaluation

Having not known what i was going to be presenting for the interim show only a couple of weeks ago, the outcome was something that i was extremely proud of. I used the knowledge i had gained from my time looking round the museums to give me the desired aesthetics that resembled a museum display. Having the leaves evenly spaced and labelled links back to the main features that i pointed out when looking through the museums. There is somethings with the display that i wish i could of done differently. I would of changed the back ground white as all display cabinets usually have a white background however without not being my display case and having to share it with other people it was best in the end to leave it as a wood back ground. Furthermore, if i had more time i would of added some back lighting which would emphasise each leaf, making it more visible and highlighting the detail on the leaves. The title of the exhibition Under Construction highlighting that what i have presented is only a working process, meaning things that i would change are things that i will do in the future.

The leaves symbolise each tree that survived the nuclear bombing in Hiroshima, by displaying them in a museum display box its as though they are fossils of the event not just the trees themselves. I wanted to avoid making this about nuclear war fair and avoiding the political side of the history and to me i feel like i have achieved this. To me i see it as a remind of the past and something that shouldn't be forgot which i suppose is the purpose of a museum. Casting in bronze relates back to ginkgo samplings sourced from the original six surviving trees being present as a gift/award to cities that have eliminated nuclear test sites. Bronze is more valuable than if i were to cast in steel making it more of a 'prize' being awarded to cities. As well as bronze is a lot stronger than steel linking back to the resilience of the ginkgo tree surviving the nuclear bomb. Each element of this piece i carefully thought out before i selected to do each process which is great as i have got the outcome that i envisaged, yet it can also be a hindrance as it has stopped my exploring other avenues that i could of possible explored. When creating i do everything for a reason which i have carefully thought about before creating, in the hope of producing a piece that is well research and is evident in the end process.

Abramovic Case Study - Research & Evaluation

Performance artist Marina Abramovic adopts a territory where both audience and artist coincide throughout the entirety of her performance. Abramovic’s early career commenced during the 1970’s an era where performance art was ridiculed, only fuelling her aspirations to prove critics wrong. Abramovic’s rhythm series, which constitutes of five individual performances from 1973 to 1974, scrutinizes the tensions between abandonment and control. At the forefront of Abramovic’s rhythm series is Rhythm 10 (Abramovic, M. 1973). Rhythm 10 consisted of Abramovic recording herself stabbing between the fingers of her left hand with 10 knives, as fast as she could; changing knives every time she cut herself. When all knives were used Abramovic would rewind the tape and playing it back, she then began re-performing the actions to the rhythm of the tape. Abramovic wilfully or not, subjected her performance to a rhythm over which she had limited control. Abramovic claims each cut manifesting itse

Bishops Art Prize what i am proposing - reflection & critical evaluation

Having not know what i was going to produce for the bishops art prize for most of this unit i am extremely happy with the outcome i have produce. I wanted to carry on developing my practise by exploring different casting styles which is exactly what i have done.  When i first brought the idea to the 3D workshop technicians they dismissed the possibilities of casting an organic form in concrete. Not wanting to fall at the first hurdle i began researching to see if anything like this has been done before with not much luck. After having further discussions with the technicians and drawing up possible options we came up with a process that seemed to be the most logical. At first i present the technicians with rather complicated plants to mould - this was a result of me not knowing the mould making process for silicone moulds and thus had to go back and get some organic material that was a lot easier suited to the casting process. Still not knowing for sure if the mould would work
