For the degree show shop i have been working on a number of things. I have planned to sell my degree piece as well as my bronze ginkgo leaves, cyanotype prints and post cards. At this current stage nothing has been fully made yet but this is something i will be continually working on after hand in. For the ginkgo leaves i am planning to sell these at individual leaves presenting them in shadow boxes. The leaves themselves would be mounted in the centre of the frames. I am also planning to present the leaves with a short explanation about the plant itself and what it symbolises. When creating a business card there was two main options for me. I could either create a really well designed, professional looking business card or create something that would be related to my professional practise and have an interesting quality about it.  After trying to design a business card for some while without having any design background and not having the funds to pay for someone to design my business cards i set about making a unique business card. My first initial thought was to create a concrete business card. the reasoning for this was because my most successful pieces of work have been made through casting. This would be another opportunity to learn a new casting technique. However after weighing up the costs for this and the time it would take to make enough wouldn't be worth it. Previously in BA3a i made the decision to collaborate with a photographer, this produced some professional images of my ginkgo leaves that i wouldn't have been able to produce myself. This is why i have decided to get the help of a professional to help again. firstly i set about where i was going to do the shoot, SG27 is the only photography space i am able to book out and this turned out to be booked up for the next week and a bit. This would result in me not having enough time to send off my design for my book to be produced and received back before hand in. I could of possibly booked out the room well in advance but i couldn't be sure as to when my work would be completed ready for the photography. On one hand i could have booked the studio an aimed for that time frame to make my work, however i didn't want this to force me to rush while making as i know this doesn't help me produce the best possible work i can. It was suggested to me to explore other possible avenues of investigating organic materials to widen my research. I reminisced on my childhood and being back at school creating cyanotype prints in science. My collection of pressed plants have been pressed in books untouched for weeks, only opening them to press more materials. I have been needing a way of preserving the plant matter additionally to the frames i am planning to use for the degree show and the cyanotype prints would allow me to do this. Creating these kinds of prints is something i haven't done for over 10 years which meant i needed to brush up on my research and do a few trail and errors to see how it is possible to get the best outcome. This that went wrong/need to change in future ventures: Painting the paper in the dark resulted in uneven ink coverage - I would avoid this in the future by applying the solution in a darkroom therefore making it possible to see the paper without effecting the overall aesthet...

Removing the plaster from the bronze this time proved a more inviting activity then previously. Knowing that i had already trailed the bronze and that i had perfected the process i was a lot more confident in the bronze coming out as a whole. The process was still extremely delicate and took a while to remove all the plaster and clean off the excess the best i could with a brush. When removing the bronze from the plaster only one of the vines didn't cast fully which was a great achievement and didn't effect the final look of the vine as i cast more than i needed just in case something like this was to happen. The reason that this particular vine didn't cast was that the vine was a lot more curved then the others, creating a U shape, this resulted in the bronze struggling to travel upwards and the gas having nowhere to escape.  After cleaning the bronze it was apparent that the bronze had bled in places, most likely there were some cracks in the plaster for the bronze...

When deciding what frames to present my pressed plants in i thought it would be best to have both the vitrine and the frames from the same the material. Unfortunately because the vitrine was already made it meant that i now need to find frames that match the aesthetics of what i already have. Having brand new frames would look too clean compared to the worn wood on the display case. Finding second hand wood frames wasn't too much of a challenge however trying to find a set of frames that were all the same wasn't so easy. All the frames that were being sold in sets weren't wood, rather MDF covered in plastic. The aesthetic of the 'fake' wood looked rather cheap and would bring the quality of the work down overall. As a result of this i decided to pay for brand new wooden frames as it became alot simpler to find frames the right size, colour and quality.
